Job Description:
The Department of Philosophy is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work in (joint) projects with Univ.-Prof. Mark Coeckelbergh, Professor of Philosophy of Media and Technology. The main research areas associated with Univ.-Prof. Mark Coeckelbergh are philosophy of technology; ethics and political philosophy of artificial intelligence and robotics.
The Philosophy of Media and Technology group offers a lively and attractive research environment specialized in bringing philosophical concepts, arguments, and approaches to bear on urgent issues concerning new technologies in society, including ethics and political philosophy of artificial intelligence and robotics.
The successful candidate will participate in the department’s research, teaching (to the extent regulated by the collective bargaining agreement) and administration. In particular, the candidate is expected to conduct, and/or participate in, research projects leading to international publications and presentations.
Active participation in research, teaching and administration – this involves:
– Developing and strengthening the independent research profile, including the independent development of research projects and writing single-authored publications
– Involvement in national and international research projects / research studies, including taking responsibility for work packages
– Participation in joint publications
– Participation in the organization of events (e.g., meetings, conferences, symposia), including coordinating roles
– International publications and presentations
– Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
– Collaboration in project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
– Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
– Supervision of students
– Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
– Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
Profile:
– A Ph.D. in philosophy (completed by 1 October 2021)
– Research focus in philosophy of technology, including but not exclusively ethics of technology such as ethics of AI
– Experience in scientific work
– Promising potential for, and evidence of, original high-level research, including an excellent PhD thesis and a beginning publication track record
– High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
– Excellent command of written and spoken English (C2 level)
– Experience in university teaching
– IT user skills
– Ability to work in a team and willingness to take responsibility for specific projects
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have
– Experience of working on research projects, preferably European projects funded by the European Commission
– Some experience in proposal writing, preferably European projects
– Experience of working with e-learning
– Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed international journals in the area of philosophy of technology and/or related areas)
– International presentation experience
– Good German language skills or willingness to acquire German language skills
– Experience of working in teams and coordination
Desirable qualifications are
– Knowledge of university processes and structures
– Experience abroad
– Experience of supervising students
– Experience in university committee work
